Swansea Channel receives new permanent dredge for sand removal
A new custom-built dredge, named Tuirkulliko, has arrived in Lake Macquarie to begin a long-term dredging operation for the Swansea Channel. The vessel, a Beaver 30 model, is capable of removing over 1,000 cubic metres of sand per day.
The project aims to remove approximately 83,000 cubic metres of sand to establish a 60-metre-wide channel with a depth of roughly three metres. This is intended to improve navigation and safety for boaters near Marks Point, Pelican, and Swansea. The extracted sand will be transported via pipeline to Nine Mile Beach.
Funding for the 10-year operation includes $10 million from the Australian Government through the Priority Community Infrastructure Program and $6 million from the NSW Government for operation and maintenance. Local officials noted the project is expected to support tourism and local business by providing more reliable access to the waterway.
