Sway DaSafo, British-Ghanaian rap pioneer, dies at 44
British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway DaSafo, born Derek Andrew Safo, has died at the age of 44 at his home in Ghana. The news was confirmed by the MOBO Awards and close associates. No official cause of death has been released, though it was noted he had previously battled Hodgkin lymphoma in 2010.
Sway was a pioneering figure in the UK hip-hop and grime scenes. He made history in 2005 as the first unsigned artist to win the MOBO Award for Best Hip-Hop Act, notably winning against established international artists like 50 Cent and The Game. His 2006 debut album, ‘This Is My Demo’, received critical acclaim and earned a Mercury Prize nomination.
Throughout his career, Sway maintained strong ties to his Ghanaian heritage and collaborated with various international artists, including Akon, Ed Sheeran, and Sarkodie. He was also recognized for his work as a mentor through his label, Dcypha Productions. He is survived by four children.
