Sweco appointed to lead major Danish coastal protection project

Sweco has been appointed as the lead consultant for ‘Nordkystens Fremtid’, one of Denmark’s largest coastal protection projects. The initiative is a joint effort between the municipalities of Halsnæs, Gribskov, and Helsingør to protect approximately 35 kilometers of coastline between Hundested and Helsingør.

The project aims to safeguard properties, infrastructure, and natural and cultural values from both gradual and sudden coastal erosion over the next 50 years. The primary method will be beach nourishment, involving the addition of sand to eight selected coastal stretches.

Scheduled to begin construction in 2027, the project enters a detailed design phase involving extensive field research. Sweco plans to use advanced technology, including drones and green LIDAR laser scanning, to map more than 1,000 hectares of terrain both above and below the water. This scale of mapping is noted as potentially one of the largest ever conducted with this specific technology. The project originates from the need for long-term solutions following the damage caused by Storm Bodil in 2013.
