Sweco to manage Kiesberg Tunnel renovation in Wuppertal
Sweco has been appointed to lead the integrated project delivery (IPA) for the comprehensive renovation of the Kiesberg Tunnel in Wuppertal, Germany. Working in an engineering community with Lombardi AG and supported by herbers-project GmbH, Sweco will manage internal project management, BIM management, and critical infrastructure consulting.
The Kiesberg Tunnel, which opened in 1970 as Europe’s first double-deck tunnel, requires significant technical upgrades due to aging structural components and safety equipment. The renovation project, commissioned by Straßen. NRW, will involve a full closure of the tunnel. Key works include external waterproofing, the installation of a new roadway slab, and the replacement of lighting, ventilation, and safety control systems. Additionally, maintenance will be performed on bridges, portals, retaining walls, and drainage systems.
