Sweden aims to become Europe’s fossil-free industrial hub

Political entities in Sweden are proposing measures to establish the country as Europe’s leading zone for fossil-free industry. The Liberal Party (Liberalerna) has outlined a plan to create 10 to 15 “acceleration zones” where the state would handle preliminary work regarding land, environment, and infrastructure to facilitate easier establishment for companies specializing in hydrogen, batteries, fossil-free steel, and carbon capture.

Key proposals from the Liberals include a 12-month maximum limit for environmental permit processing once a complete application is submitted and providing targeted state support to municipalities to ensure they have the resources to manage large-scale industrial expansions. Additionally, they advocate for synchronized power grid planning by Svenska kraftnät to meet the needs of these new zones.

In Karlskrona, there is a push to leverage existing industrial expertise and technical education to become a hub for the green transition. Support for this shift includes calls for a green industrial package, green tax credits for fossil-free industry, and new models for risk-sharing between electricity production expansion and industrial demand.
