Sweden alcohol consumption continues to decline in 2025
Alcohol consumption in Sweden continued to decline in 2025, dropping by 2.7% compared to 2024. According to definitive data from the Centralförbundet för alkohol- och narkotikaupplysning (CAN), the total consumption reached 8.16 liters of pure alcohol per person aged 15 and older, marking the lowest level since comprehensive measurements began in 2001.
Researcher Björn Trolldal noted that the decline has accelerated in recent years, with an overall 8% decrease over the last three years. The trend is driven largely by men and younger populations, including young adults in their 30s, who are consuming less. Conversely, consumption is increasing among older demographics, particularly older women, as higher-consumption cohorts enter retirement.
In terms of distribution, Systembolaget accounted for 72% of total consumption in 2025, followed by restaurants at 12%, traveler imports at 7%, and folköl sales at 4%. While farm sales were legalized on June 1, 2025, they represented only 0.03% of total consumption during the second half of the year.
