Sweden and Finland political leaders face climate and election scrutiny

Political leaders in Sweden and Finland are facing criticism regarding their commitment to climate action. In Sweden, Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson has expressed a lack of concern regarding rising temperatures, a stance viewed by some as contributing to climate delay. Similarly, in Finland, members of the Finns Party have used rhetoric such as ‘climate hysteria’ and ‘climate nonsense,’ despite the country's ambitious EU climate goals.

In the Swedish political landscape, Jimmie Åkesson has also engaged in strategic maneuvers affecting coalition dynamics. Ahead of the 2026 election, Åkesson issued an ultimatum regarding the Liberal Party (Liberalerna), stating that if the party failed to reach 3.5 percent in polls, he would advise Moderate and Christian Democrat voters against supporting them.
