Sweden and US Online Gambling Regulation Compared
Sweden replaced its long‑standing state monopoly on casino, lottery and sports betting with an open licensing system on 1 January 2019. The Swedish Gambling Authority now issues a single national licence, and the share of gambling conducted through licensed operators has risen to about 85 percent, a substantial increase from the pre‑reform level.
In the United States there is no federal framework for online casino gambling. Each state determines whether to allow online games, sets its own licensing rules and tax rates, and governs the market through state‑level authorities. Federal statutes such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and the Wire Act shape payment processing and certain betting activities, but the day‑to‑day regulatory landscape varies widely across the 50 states.
