Sweden: Calls for drug testing in state security agencies

The Swedish Employers' Agency (Arbetsgivarverket) is calling for an urgent government investigation into the inability of certain state agencies to conduct random drug testing. Currently, the Police, the Swedish Armed Forces, and the Prison and Probation Service lack the authority to perform such tests on their personnel.

The agency argues that this represents a significant security risk, particularly as the geopolitical landscape changes and threats from organized crime and foreign powers increase. They note that employees with drug dependencies may be more vulnerable to pressure from criminal actors or hostile entities. Furthermore, the agency highlights that increased demands for IT security and the handling of protected information necessitate high levels of professional reliability.

In the private sector, data from occupational health services suggests that approximately 5–6 percent of tested employees show traces of narcotics. While some political groups in Sweden are advocating for increased background checks, debates continue regarding the balance between employer oversight and employee privacy rights.
