Sweden bank fraud profits rise amid calls for new legislation
Debaters are calling for new legislation in Sweden to hold banks more accountable for rising bank fraud. Criminal profits from these fraudulent activities increased by 24 percent between February and July 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching approximately one million SEK per day.
Currently, banks cover only about 10 percent of fraud losses, amounting to roughly 30 to 40 million SEK annually. This leaves bank customers to bear the remaining losses, estimated between 300 and 400 million SEK per year. Proponents of the new laws suggest that the incoming government should implement regulations, potentially modeled after more generous British standards, to shift a higher share of the financial burden onto banks and protect consumers and micro-businesses.
