Sweden calls for tougher response to Russian hybrid attacks

Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson is calling for a more forceful reaction to alleged Russian hybrid attacks across Europe. Citing an escalation in Russian activity, Jonson noted that Russia appears willing to take greater political and military risks, potentially due to lack of success in Ukraine, in an attempt to divide Europe and undermine support for Ukraine.

To deter such behavior, Jonson advocates for serious and tangible consequences. Proposed measures include expanding and enforcing sanctions, as well as discussing restrictions on Schengen visas for Russian citizens at the EU level.

Additionally, the Defense Minister emphasized the need for a more coordinated approach to combat Russia’s shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea, which is used to bypass Western sanctions. While Sweden has intensified inspections and intercepted suspicious tankers, Jonson noted that other nations, such as Germany, have been more cautious. He stressed that a unified effort is required to effectively impact the Russian energy market.
