Sweden: Calls to prioritize mental health in integration and social services
Debaters and experts in Sweden are calling for mental health to be integrated into regional and municipal integration strategies. A new report highlights that for the approximately 48,700 Ukrainians under the EU's mass fleeing directive in Sweden, successful integration requires more than just employment and housing. Surveys conducted by Help Ukraine Gothenburg indicate significant levels of loneliness and anxiety among this population, with many facing barriers to accessing healthcare due to long wait times and language obstacles.
Separately, there are growing calls for increased psychological expertise within the Swedish social services to better protect vulnerable children. This follows a legal case involving a five-year-old girl in Gothenburg who died in an apartment fire. Critics argue that despite repeated reports of neglect, social services failed to conduct in-depth investigations, citing a lack of specialized communication skills and standardized methods to assess child-parent relationships effectively.
