Sweden celebrates Heritage Day to protect endangered cultural sites

Sweden will celebrate Heritage Day from September 11 to 13, 2026, as part of the European Heritage Days organized by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. This year’s theme, “Cultural Heritage – Worth Protecting!”, focuses on environments, crafts, and sites at risk due to rapid societal changes, climate change, or other crises.

National Heritage Board Director Susanne Thedéen emphasized that maintaining knowledge of heritage during stable periods is essential for protecting it during times of crisis. Events are organized nationwide, from Kiruna to Trelleborg, involving hundreds of associations and museums.

In the Skåne region, 38 activities are scheduled, including visits to historical churches, pottery workshops, and an underground military command center from the 1950s in Åstorp. Other national highlights include guided tours of public art in Stockholm, Sami cultural activities in Kiruna, and historical walks in Gothenburg.
