Stockholm climate protests erupt ahead of Swedish general election
Massive climate demonstrations have taken place in Stockholm, with reports indicating participation ranging from 10,000 to as many as 50,000 people. The protests, involving hundreds of organizations including unions, religious groups, and youth associations, occur just weeks before the Swedish general election on September 13.
Activists and experts are criticizing the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Since 2022, the administration has cut petrol taxes and eased requirements for low-carbon fuel alternatives, moves that a monitoring commission warns could cause Sweden to miss its 2030 target of reducing transport-related CO2 emissions by 70 percent. Sweden aims for climate neutrality by 2045.
Climate activist Greta Thunberg joined the march, stating that no current political party is proposing policies that align with the scientific necessity required to avoid climate catastrophe. Recent polling suggests that environmental protection is a top priority for 37 percent of voters, making climate policy a central issue in the upcoming election.
