Sweden clinches World Cup knockout spot after 1-1 draw with Japan

Sweden's national team secured a place in the World Cup knockout stage by drawing 1-1 with Japan. Midfielder Anthony Elanga scored the equaliser in the 62nd minute, sealing the draw that guaranteed Sweden progression as one of the best third‑placed teams.

Elanga later admitted he did not realise the point was enough, expressing disappointment before being told by assistant coach Sebastian Larsson that the draw had ensured advancement. Captain Victor Lindelöf also commented on the misunderstanding. The match also saw a muscle injury to defender Isak Hien, who left the game early, and a cramp for Lindelöf, but both were expected to recover.

Sweden will now move on to face a group winner in the round of 16, while Japan will be eliminated.
