Sweden conducts Aurora 26 military exercise for mass casualty logistics

Sweden recently conducted Aurora 26, its largest national military exercise since the 1950s, to prepare for the logistical and psychological realities of a major conflict. The exercise, which took place from late April to mid-May, involved approximately 18,000 soldiers from 13 different countries, including participants from the United States, France, Poland, the Netherlands, and drone experts from Ukraine.

A significant component of the drill focused on the management of deceased personnel. Using over 500 mannequins and body bags to simulate casualties, the exercise tested the entire chain of procedures, including recovery, identification, and notification of allied embassies and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The simulation also involved testing the capacity of morgues and the coordination of funeral services.

Beyond the military, the exercise included representatives from the Church of Sweden, the Tax Agency, and insolvency agencies to test institutional readiness and moral preparedness. The Church of Sweden, acting as a state authority for funeral services, maintains plans for mass burials that could accommodate up to five percent of the population. This shift toward a ‘total defense’ concept follows Sweden’s accession to NATO in 2024.
