Sweden conducts large-scale drinking water security exercise

Experts from various Swedish authorities, universities, and water companies recently participated in a major preparedness exercise at the SGS laboratory in Linköping. The drill aimed to test the ability to rapidly analyze water samples and provide reliable guidance to the public during crises or wartime scenarios.

Approximately 50 participants from organizations including the Swedish Food Agency, the National Veterinary Institute, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, and Stockholm Vatten och Avfall took part in the sixth iteration of this exercise. The simulation included scenarios where participants had to determine the safety of water supplies under pressure, with one test sample being identified as unsafe within hours of receipt.

Separately, discussions regarding water safety in Sweden's mountain regions have emerged due to increased use of water purification products by hikers. While there have been concerns regarding stomach flu outbreaks near Kebnekaise, the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) noted that a 2023 outbreak was caused by calicivirus rather than contaminated mountain streams. Experts from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and STF maintain that flowing mountain water has historically been safe to drink, though changing travel patterns and increased visitor density are noted factors in the landscape.
