Sweden conducts large-scale military burial logistics exercise

The Swedish Armed Forces conducted a large-scale military exercise focused on the logistics of burying fallen soldiers. This drill was part of Aurora 26, the largest national military exercise in Sweden since the 1990s, which involved approximately 18,000 personnel from 13 countries.

As part of Sweden’s shift toward ‘total defense’ following its 2024 accession to NATO, the exercise tested the entire chain of casualty management. This included the recovery and identification of deceased personnel, notifying allied embassies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, and conducting military burials with honors.

A study published in ‘Frontiers in Psychiatry’ noted that the simulation used over 500 mannequins and body bags to represent fallen service members, a scale of training not seen in Sweden since the early 1950s. The drill involved over 300 military personnel alongside representatives from the Church of Sweden, the Swedish Tax Agency, and national recruitment agencies. Authorities stated the purpose of the planning is to strengthen institutional preparedness and soldier morale rather than predicting specific casualty numbers.
