Sweden debates mosque funding and religious freedom

Debate is intensifying in Sweden regarding religious freedom and the transparency of mosque financing. Discussions have emerged concerning large-scale efforts to build mosques in every Swedish city, led by organizations such as ‘Vi mår bra’. Critics argue that while religious freedom is a fundamental right, it must not create a ‘blind spot’ regarding who funds, governs, and exerts influence over these institutions.

Concerns have been raised about the structural difficulties of monitoring informal fundraising via social media, noting that historical precedents in the 1980s and 1990s showed how humanitarian funds could be difficult to track once they entered complex networks.

Political tensions are also rising, with criticisms directed at political platforms that target Muslim communities. Some political rhetoric has included proposals to demolish mosques where Islamist values are allegedly preached and to criminalize certain religious practices.
