Sweden debates participation of Russian athletes in upcoming championships

Swedish sports organizations and government officials are seeking to restrict Russian athletes from participating in upcoming international competitions held on Swedish soil. The Swedish Ski Federation, supported by the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) and the government, aims to block Russian cross-country skiers who have received clearance from the international skiing federation to compete at the World Championships in Falun next year.

In a separate development, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has awarded the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships to Russia. Swedish weightlifter Joen Vikingsson Sjöblom noted that while he disagrees with Russia's actions, athletes may face the necessity of competing in the country to secure qualification for future Olympic Games.
