Sweden debates state responsibility for schools and disability support

Debates in Sweden are highlighting systemic issues regarding municipal control over essential public services, specifically in education and disability support (LSS).

Regarding education, the Liberal Party is advocating for a return to state responsibility for schools. They argue that the 1989 municipalization has led to significant regional disparities, with funding differences for students reaching over 70,000 SEK per year depending on the municipality. Proposed reforms include legal requirements for textbooks, staffed libraries, and limits on teaching hours to improve working conditions.

Simultaneously, there is growing pressure to reform the LSS (Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments). Critics, including the organization FUB, argue that the law's intent to provide independence and equality is being undermined by municipal cost-cutting and restrictive interpretations. Advocates are calling for the state to take over responsibility for personal assistance to ensure equitable support across the country, regardless of a resident's postal code.
