A major maritime tragedy has occurred in Vanuatu following the sinking of the ferry MV Matui. The vessel was traveling between the islands of Espiritu Santo and Ambae when it went down under severe weather conditions, including 20-knot winds and heavy seas.

The Vanuatu government, through the office of Prime Minister Jotham Nataphat, has confirmed that at least one person is dead and more than 30 people remain missing. Of the more than 40 passengers and crew members on board, 15 individuals have been successfully rescued.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with assistance from the French Armed Forces, which has deployed a Falcon 200 aircraft to support the coordination of vessels in the area. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (COSS) in New Caledonia is also participating in the efforts.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the shipwreck. Authorities are examining whether the incident was caused by the extreme weather, a failure to heed meteorological warnings, or potential negligence such as overloading the vessel.
