Sweden Democrats ideologue sparks debate over cultural nationalism
Mattias Karlsson, the chief ideologue for the Sweden Democrats (SD), has ignited a debate regarding the definitions of Swedish identity and nationalism. In a social media post, Karlsson presented a comparison to distinguish 'cultural nationalism' from 'ethnonationalism'.
Karlsson argued that under pure ethnonationalism, a light-skinned man of Swedish descent who joins IS and commits acts of terrorism would be considered 'more Swedish' than a dark-skinned, adopted individual who speaks a regional dialect, serves as an officer in the Swedish army, and engages in traditional folk music and local heritage societies.
Critics have characterized his argument as a rhetorical device that creates a false dilemma by using two extreme, polarized examples. Commentators suggest the comparison avoids deeper discussions regarding historical community, heritage, and the continuity of national identity.
