Sweden denies deportation of climate activist David Alcer

The Swedish Migration Agency has decided not to deport David Alcer, a German-Hungarian EU citizen and semiconductor researcher at Lund University. Alcer had been facing deportation threats for a year due to his involvement in climate activism and acts of civil disobedience.

Alcer, a member of the climate group Återställ Våtmarker, gained public attention after interrupting a Melodifestivalen performance in 2023 with a protest banner. He has also been involved in demonstrations at the Riksdag and actions to stop peat mining. While the police had recommended his deportation, citing his activism as a potential threat to the democratic order, the Migration Agency ruled that his actions did not warrant expulsion.

Alcer credited his decision to the support of hundreds of people, labor unions, and the United Nations, who pressured the Swedish government to halt the deportation process.
