Sweden deports 20-year-old woman to Thailand

A 20-year-old woman named Banthita has been deported from Sweden to Thailand, highlighting ongoing debates regarding ‘teen deportation’ policies. Banthita, who moved to Sweden with her mother and sister in 2022, received a deportation order from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) shortly before Christmas 2024.

Her family expresses frustration with the current legal framework. Her stepfather, Christer, criticized the decision, stating that the family works and does not burden society. The family is now questioning the effectiveness of the government’s ‘teen valve’ (tonårsventilen) solution, which was intended to prevent such deportations, as they believe many young people are still falling through the cracks of the system.
