Sweden establishes national council to combat ageism

The Swedish government is addressing ageism in the workplace through the establishment of a national council. Initiated by Minister for Older People Anna Tenje, the council aims to identify tools to combat discrimination, prejudices, and stereotypes directed at older workers.

The group includes various figures, such as academic Ingemar Skoog from the University of Gothenburg, to help visualize issues and propose concrete changes to society and the labor market. This initiative comes amid concerns that Sweden ranks poorly in the Nordic region regarding the employment of individuals over the age of 55.

Discussions also highlight the personal dilemmas faced by older professionals, such as the choice between maintaining high-paying IT roles or transitioning to more socially meaningful municipal work that may result in lower salaries and reduced pensions.
