Volvo Cars announces 2,500 job cuts amid third-quarter losses FAST-MOVING

Volvo Cars has announced plans to cut 2,500 jobs globally, representing approximately 6 percent of its workforce. Of these reductions, 2,000 positions are expected to be eliminated in Sweden, primarily affecting office and R&D roles in Gothenburg. The company intends to manage the restructuring through natural attrition, voluntary departure packages, and the termination of external consultancy contracts, with the process expected to conclude by mid-2027.

The restructuring follows a significant financial downturn in the third quarter of 2026, during which the company reported an operating loss of 513 million euros. Revenue fell by 23 percent to approximately 6 billion euros. The company cited intense competition from domestic Chinese brands and a sharp decline in Chinese market sales—down nearly 50 percent—as primary drivers of the loss.

In the United States, performance has been impacted by high import tariffs and the removal of electric vehicle subsidies. While Europe remains the only region where Volvo has seen growth and profitability, the company is shifting its strategy to include more regionalized structures and localized production, such as the planned XC60 manufacturing in Charleston, US, in early 2027.
