Sweden expands Villaeffekten energy subsidies for homeowners

Starting September 1, Swedish homeowners can apply for the expanded 'Villaeffekten' state energy subsidy to improve home energy efficiency. The program is designed for owners of one- or two-family houses built before 1990 that are not connected to a district heating network.

The subsidy covers 30 percent of material costs for various energy-saving measures, including additional insulation and the replacement or improvement of windows and doors, with a maximum grant of 60,000 SEK per house. These material costs can potentially be combined with the ROT tax deduction for labor costs.

Experts suggest that upgrading energy performance is increasingly important for property value, noting that homes with better energy ratings can sell for significantly higher prices. Applications are processed by the County Administrative Board via Boverket’s e-service, and the subsidy may apply to measures initiated as early as October 17, 2025.
