Iran and Sweden exchange diplomatic expulsions
Sweden and Iran have entered a cycle of reciprocal diplomatic expulsions. Sweden recently ordered an Iranian embassy official to leave the country, citing activities incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer and Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated the move was necessary to protect Swedish citizens and interests. Officials alleged that Iran has conducted long-term security-threatening activities in Sweden, including targeting regime opponents and Jewish and Israeli interests through the use of criminal networks.
In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador in Tehran and ordered a Swedish diplomat to leave Iran within 48 hours. Tehran rejected Sweden's allegations as “unjustified” and “baseless,” claiming the decision was influenced by the Zionist regime to disrupt the operations of the Iranian embassy in Stockholm.
