Sweden explores integrated models for child and youth services

Discussions regarding the organization of child and youth services in Sweden highlight a push for more integrated models. One proposal suggests replacing the current fragmented system—which separates child psychiatry (BUP) and social services—with a unified organization for child, youth, and family treatment (BUF). This approach aims to address complex issues like mental health, substance abuse, and family conflict through a single entity rather than relying on difficult coordination between separate agencies.

In parallel, the ‘Backa barnet’ model, which originated in Ystad in 2018, has expanded to 19 municipalities. The model focuses on providing early, coordinated support by bringing together various actors, including healthcare and local police. Current development efforts for the model include improving support for children with disabilities and creating standardized guidelines to ensure uniform application of legislation across different municipalities.
