Sweden faces challenges in youth digital habits and dental care

In Sweden, new policies are set to require primary school students to hand in their mobile phones during the school day. This follows recommendations from the Public Health Agency regarding screen time limits for teenagers. Despite these political moves, there is a growing grassroots trend among young people to reduce digital usage. Data from Eventbrite shows a 567 percent global increase in mobile-free events between 2024 and 2025, and a Novus survey indicates that 45 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds are considering switching to simpler mobile phones to regain control over their time.

Separately, the dental care system in Dalarna, Sweden, is facing a crisis. Approximately 2,000 young people are currently waiting for orthodontic treatment, with 900 new patients added to the queue annually. Some individuals have been waiting for over five years. Unlike other healthcare sectors, dental care lacks a statutory 90-day care guarantee, leading to significant delays for families in the region.
