Sweden faces concerns over climate resilience and crisis preparedness

Recent surveys in Sweden highlight growing concerns regarding national crisis preparedness and climate-related vulnerabilities. A study by Wateraid reveals that only 30 percent of Swedes believe the country can effectively protect its infrastructure and society from extreme weather. Water scarcity is a primary concern, particularly in southern Sweden, where 45 percent of residents expressed worry. Experts note that while 90 percent of climate disasters are water-related, only 3 percent of global climate finance is currently directed toward water initiatives.

Separately, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MCF) reports that 59 percent of the population finds it difficult to maintain sufficient emergency preparedness at home due to lack of knowledge or financial constraints. While only half of Swedes believe they could survive for one week without societal assistance, the agency noted this is an improvement from previous years. In response, the MCF is launching the ‘Preparedness Year 2027’ initiative to strengthen readiness among households, businesses, and volunteer organizations.
