Sweden faces elderly malnutrition and care safety challenges

New data highlights significant health and safety challenges facing the elderly population in Sweden. A study conducted by Karolinska Institutet for the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) indicates that approximately 100,000 people over the age of 65 are currently malnourished, with an additional 800,000 at risk. Malnutrition in seniors is linked to lower quality of life, reduced physical function, decreased energy, and increased mental health issues.

Separately, an investigation by the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) into Lex Sarah reports between 2023 and 2025 revealed serious safety concerns in elderly care. Out of 1,430 reports, 150 involved physical, verbal, or sexual abuse by staff, while 170 concerned poor treatment or psychological abuse. While legislation passed in March 2026 allows employers to request criminal record checks, such checks are not mandatory, leading to calls for more robust and consistent protection systems for vulnerable seniors.
