Swedish MEPs denied entry to Israel
Swedish Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Jonas Sjöstedt and Hanna Gedin from the Left Party were denied entry to Israel on Sunday. The two parliamentarians were intercepted during a layover in Athens and informed that the Israeli government had barred their arrival.
The MEPs had planned a trip to the West Bank to meet with human rights organizations, including Save the Children, and to visit refugee camps. Hanna Gedin stated that the group was merely echoing claims made by the United Nations and various human rights organizations regarding the situation in Gaza and the West Bank.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar issued the ban, alleging that the MEPs have consistently acted against Israel by making false accusations. Specifically, the Israeli Foreign Ministry cited claims regarding genocide, intentional starvation, and deliberate attacks on children and medical personnel as grounds for the decision. Jonas Sjöstedt noted that both the European Union and the Swedish embassy in Israel have protested the denial of entry.
