Sweden faces rising issues with wild boar populations and wildlife accidents

Sweden is experiencing a significant increase in wild boar populations, which has grown from approximately 100 individuals in the 1980s to an estimated 50,000–80,000 today. This surge is causing substantial damage to agriculture and natural areas. In Östergötland alone, direct damages are estimated at 27 million SEK. Because wild boars are considered huntable animals, farmers are ineligible for state compensation for damages, unlike those caused by non-huntable species like wolves.

Separately, the Sörmland region has seen a 47 percent increase in handled wildlife accidents between 2016 and 2025. Police attribute this rise to higher traffic volumes, darker seasonal conditions, and healthy animal populations moving across larger areas during mating seasons. Authorities recommend that drivers use hazard lights and warning triangles at accident sites to assist search hunters.
