Sweden faces rising nicotine use among pregnant women
Nicotine use in Sweden is rising, with a notable increase in pregnant women using nicotine products. Data from Socialstyrelsen indicates that self-reported snus use among pregnant women in regions like Blekinge and Dalarna has increased significantly since the introduction of white snus in 2016.
White snus can contain up to twenty times more nicotine than traditional brown snus and features a higher pH level, which allows nicotine to enter the bloodstream more rapidly, potentially leading to stronger addiction. Despite these risks, white snus is subject to less stringent regulation and does not fall under the same tobacco laws as traditional products.
Health experts and the Hjärt-Lungfonden have raised concerns regarding the health risks to fetuses, including increased risks of premature birth, miscarriage, sudden infant death, and cardiovascular issues. To reach a nicotine-free generation by 2040, advocates are proposing stricter regulations for all nicotine products, higher taxes on white snus, and nicotine-free school hours.
