Sweden faces rural service risks amid climate transition

A new report from IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet and Trivector Mobility warns that the transition to electric vehicles poses economic risks to rural gas stations in Sweden. Researchers suggest these stations may face closure as electrification progresses, potentially stripping rural areas of essential services. Beyond fuel, these locations often serve as hubs for food, medicine, and parcel services.

In response to energy and climate challenges, the Center Party has proposed a plan to increase the proportion of biofuels in petrol and diesel without raising pump prices. Their strategy involves lowering taxes on biofuels and potentially fossil fuels to offset the higher production costs of green energy. While the party argues this would boost domestic production and jobs, Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari has dismissed the proposal, stating that the government has already implemented tax reductions for biofuels.
