Sweden faces stagnant gender pay gap as equality progress stalls

The gender pay gap in Sweden has remained largely stagnant since 2019, with women earning approximately 9.9 percent less than men on average. This disparity translates to women effectively finishing their paid workday at 16:12, while men receive pay for an additional 48 minutes.

This gap results in significant long-term economic consequences for women, including lower parental benefits, reduced pension amounts, and diminished ability to build financial savings. The stagnation is attributed to a gender-segregated labor market where women are concentrated in lower-paying sectors. Even when accounting for education and occupation, an unexplained wage gap persists.

In response, the network ‘Lön hela dagen’ has launched a national alarm to prioritize wage equality in upcoming elections. Proposed reforms to address these structural issues include state-funded wage increases for nurses and preschool staff, increased access to venture capital for women-led businesses, and measures to strengthen women's pensions.
