Sweden government to address estrogen medication shortage
The Swedish government is set to present a plan to resolve a prolonged shortage of essential estrogen medications. Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed, alongside representatives from the Swedish Medical Products Agency and the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV), will present findings from a government mandate aimed at improving access to hormone treatments.
The shortage has significantly impacted thousands of women, particularly affecting the availability of estrogen patches, sprays, and gels. Patients have faced difficulties obtaining prescribed treatments, often requiring multiple pharmacy visits or medical consultations to find alternatives. The crisis has been attributed to rising international demand outstripping supply.
Despite a 60 percent price increase approved for generic manufacturer Sandoz earlier this summer, pharmacy shelves remain empty. Sandoz officials have noted uncertainty regarding the volumes required to fully meet current demand.
