Swedish Public Agencies Dominated by Women Amid Gender Equality Debate

A digital conference titled “Backlash? Gender‑inclusive language in a time of resistance” highlighted a growing pushback against gender‑neutral language across governments, academia and the media. Researchers reported that many politicians and officials are now challenging the use of inclusive terminology.

In Sweden, women now hold overwhelming majorities in several state agencies. Recent data show 85 % of staff in the Equality Authority are women, with similar figures in the Ethics Review Board (82 %), the Human Rights Institute (81 %) and the Children’s Ombudsman (78 %). Analysts note that while women dominate these bodies, the gender imbalance has attracted little public debate, prompting concerns about a new form of bias in public governance.
