Sweden healthcare governance debate focuses on regional vs. state models

Debate continues regarding the structure of the Swedish healthcare system, specifically concerning proposals to nationalize healthcare and remove regional governance. Arguments against nationalization cite OECD data from 2024, which suggests that Sweden's current model performs better than state-run models in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland regarding preventable and treatable mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants.

Data from Eurostat also indicates that Sweden has better access to dental care than state-governed neighbors like Norway and Denmark. In Sweden, approximately 4 percent of the population has unmet dental needs due to cost or distance, compared to nearly 12 percent in Norway and Denmark.

In Kalmar County, local political discussions emphasize the importance of regional management. Proponents of the current system argue that regional control ensures the survival of local hospitals that might otherwise be lost under nationalized decision-making. Efforts in the region have focused on increasing continuity of care, with the percentage of patients having a fixed doctor rising from approximately 50 to 74 percent.
