Sweden healthcare: Proposals to shorten waiting times and address doctor shortages
In Sweden, political and medical professionals are calling for significant improvements to the healthcare system. The Moderate Party has proposed strengthening the healthcare guarantee by reducing the maximum waiting time from 90 to 30 days. Their proposal includes a compensation requirement for regions that fail to meet statutory guarantees, suggesting that patients should be offered treatment at no extra cost in other regions if their home region cannot provide timely care.
Simultaneously, medical specialists in Gävleborg are highlighting a critical shortage of general practitioners. The region currently lacks approximately 110 specialist doctors to meet recommended standards. Experts emphasize that continuity of care—having a consistent doctor—is vital for patient outcomes, citing studies that show long-term doctor-patient relationships significantly reduce hospitalizations and mortality rates. There are calls for a concrete plan to increase the number of trainee doctors to ensure sustainable primary care by 2036.
