Sweden faces rise in antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has identified Sweden as a country of particular concern regarding the rise of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea.
Microbiologist Thomas Åkerlund of the Public Health Agency of Sweden reports that while resistant cases were historically isolated and often contracted abroad, there is now a significant increase in resistant bacteria within the country. This trend suggests the establishment of local infection chains.
Last year, nine cases of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea were detected in Sweden, and four have been identified so far this year, compared to a previous average of three per year. The resistant strain primarily shows resistance to ceftriaxone, the current first-line treatment, and exhibits some resistance to azithromycin. While older antibiotics or the new drug zoliflodacin (not yet approved in the EU) remain options, the increase in failed treatments is a growing concern. The Public Health Agency is currently maintaining a specialized monitoring program for these bacteria.
