Sweden implements flexible and digital models for home care

Swedish municipalities are implementing new approaches to home care services to improve efficiency and staff well-being. In several regions, including Stockholm, Järfälla, Karlstad, and Uppsala, care providers are moving away from strict minute-by-minute scheduling toward a framework time model. This method grants staff greater flexibility and autonomy to adjust tasks, such as moving a shower or a walk to a different day, which has reportedly reduced workplace stress and optimized travel times.

In Malmö, a pilot project is testing digital home care through video and audio communication. Running from late September through March, the initiative involves seven work teams and focuses on voluntary participation. Digital visits are used for tasks like check-ins after walks or instructional training, aiming to free up physical resources for more intensive care needs. While the project seeks to increase security and planning ease, local authorities are monitoring risks such as technical failures.
