Sweden implements mandatory school mobile phone ban
Sweden has implemented a mandatory mobile phone ban in all primary and preschool levels. The law, which took effect in August, requires students to hand in their devices at the start of the school day to reduce classroom unrest and improve concentration. Education Minister Simona Mohamsson stated the policy aims to provide better conditions for students to focus on instruction.
In Denmark, the government is pursuing a similar total ban on mobile phones and private screens in both classrooms and schoolyards. The Danish government has proposed allocating 1 billion Danish kroner toward this initiative as part of a larger educational budget.
Meanwhile, Estonia is being highlighted for its high performance in PISA rankings, particularly in reading, mathematics, and science. Observers note a significant contrast in classroom discipline and order in Estonian schools compared to recent trends in Sweden, where PISA results in reading comprehension and mathematics have reached historic lows. Despite these successes, Estonian educators note that students still face challenges with reading proficiency.
