Sweden implements national mobile phone ban in schools

A new national law in Sweden has implemented a mobile phone ban in schools, requiring devices to be collected at the start of the school day and returned at its conclusion. While some schools, such as Innovitaskolan in Östersund, have practiced similar policies for years, the legislation is now being applied nationwide.

Reactions to the ban are divided among students and parents. Some students report that the absence of phones helps them focus on schoolwork and encourages social interaction with peers. Conversely, other students express a desire to use phones during breaks.

Parents have raised concerns regarding the impact on older students in grades 7–9. They argue that the ban may compromise safety and communication, particularly during unsupervised breaks, when students leave school grounds, or during gaps in the schedule. Parents note that mobile phones serve essential practical functions, acting as digital IDs, bank cards, and tools for contacting guardians during emergencies or transit.
