Sweden initiates research into halved public transport ticket prices

K2, the National Knowledge Centre for Collective Mobility, has launched a nationwide research project to evaluate the impact of the Swedish government's decision to halve monthly public transport pass prices. The price reduction is scheduled to take effect across the country from July 1 to December 31, 2026.

The research initiative includes both quantitative and qualitative components. Maria Börjesson, a professor of economics at VTI and researcher at K2, is leading the quantitative study, while Joel Hansson from Lund University's Faculty of Engineering (LTH) is heading the qualitative portion. Preliminary data is expected as early as October.

While Svensk Kollektivtrafik views the government's proposal for temporary subsidies as a positive step to support households and increase the attractiveness of public transit, the organization has raised concerns regarding financial risks for regional authorities. They argue that the proposed 6.5 billion SEK in subsidies may not cover all actual costs, such as administrative expenses, reduced single-ticket revenue, or the need for increased service to prevent overcrowding. Additionally, technical and regulatory challenges regarding the implementation of the subsidy for monthly passes have been noted.
