Sweden introduces new maritime strategy to bolster shipping and security

The Swedish government has introduced a new maritime strategy designed to bolster competitiveness, fossil-free transitions, and the management of maritime resources. Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson emphasized that the strategy aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises in becoming more robust and resource-efficient.

The strategy addresses critical vulnerabilities in Sweden's supply chain. Currently, between 85% and 90% of all goods entering Sweden arrive via sea routes. However, a significant portion of these transports is carried out by foreign shipping companies, which presents a potential risk to national stability during crises or wartime.

Environmental protection is also a key component, particularly concerning the Baltic Sea. While the strategy seeks to promote a healthy marine environment, observers note that cooperation with Russia regarding pollution control has stalled following 2022, complicating efforts to maintain the ecological balance of the region.
