Sweden investigates declining birth rates amid welfare reform debate

The Swedish government has commissioned an investigation to analyze and address the country's historically low birth rate. Social Minister Jakob Forssmed has emphasized that investing in children and families should be viewed as an investment in the nation's collective future.

However, critics point to a contradiction in government policy regarding upcoming welfare reforms. A proposed reform set to take effect on January 1, 2027, suggests that households receiving subsistence support with more than three children will receive less in benefits than under current standards. This shift raises concerns about the economic stability of large families already relying on the social safety net.
