Sweden investigator reports hundreds of thousands of children face honor-based oppression

Rebecca Lagh, the Swedish government’s special investigator on honor-based oppression, reports that hundreds of thousands of children in Sweden are living under such pressure. Her investigation, which included interviews with youth and staff in preschools, schools, and leisure centers, reveals an alarming reality where children's lives are restricted from a very young age.

Findings indicate that guardians may prevent children from participating in gender-equal play or infringe upon LGBTQ+ rights. In schools, consequences become more severe as teenage girls face monitoring by male relatives regarding their clothing, social circles, and activities. The investigation also noted concerns regarding long-term school absences, potential forced marriages, and unauthorized travel abroad for ‘upbringing trips.’

Lagh highlights that school staff often hesitate to report concerns to social services due to a lack of knowledge, fear of making mistakes, or fear of being perceived as discriminatory. She emphasizes the need for better support and consistent protection for children regardless of their location in the country.
